How the professionals get streak free glass.

Any mum of toddlers or any dog owner would probably tell you that streak free glass is the bane of their lives . As both a mother of little kids and a professional cleaner I'm here to tell you it is mine too!
If you don't do it right then it's a lot of graft for a very dissapointing result , so you do it over again only to find the same thing happens again !  Well ,  I am going to tell you how to go from streaks to sparkling in a flash!
There's no great trick to this I'm afraid as it's all down to the tools you use ! But the good news is that there's not much elbow grease  or cost involved !

Firstly let's have a chat about cloths ... this is the important bit in your quest for a streak free finish . You need to invest in a "glass cloth" now when I say invest I don't mean break the bank , they are available from certain U.K. Bargain shops for a mere 39p (leave me a comment if you need to know where!) and go up to £3 each from a leading houseware shop (again leave a comment for info !) . The difference is literally in the thickness which has no affect on the overall outcome! These glass cloths can be used with just water but I do prefer to use a glass cleaner I do have a specific brand I have always used and won't use anything else , it's 99p so won't break the bank ! ( leave me a comment for details !)

Please note that these are not the same as the average microfibre cloths and are not sold in most shops , you have to know what you're looking for ! These have a shiny finish/ feel to them .
So in short these are the only two products you need .
 I use them to clean
  • Windows
  • Glass
  • Stainless steel
  • Televisions
  • Mirrors
  • Car windows
  • Oven door exteriors
  • Gloss tiles
  • Gloss kitchen cupboard doors
  • Gloss wardrobe doors .
  • Taps & porcelain (after sanitising)
  • Shower doors .
When used wet you may need to dry the area being cleaned with another dry glass cloth but when used dry with the spray it will sparkle with no buffing .

Final thoughts.

I have tried everything from vinegar, newspaper, shammy, ammonia , squeegees, those nifty little squeegee machines you can buy at great cost , and the only effective way I've found to be streak free is by using the simple little glass cloth .
If you try it let me know or if you have any tips of your own We'd love to hear them drop us a line in the comments box !

Living with less stuff.

If I lived on my own I'd have virtually no possessions , no TV , and a very tidy house . But I don't , and  as I can't get rid of everyone else's possessions I have to find a way of  dealing with their "stuff".
My partner is a borderline hoarder who still keeps boxes from phones he no longer possesses and a box from a wallet he has owned for over a decade ( incase he needs to take it back ) and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
I battled for years to contain my "stuff " too , sentimental stuff , things people have given to me , gifts, clothes with price tags still on them ... And so the list went on . I would stuff it all in drawers , cupboards and the garage . The house would be serene looking on the surface but the inner workings were a tangled mess of chaos .
So what changed ?  I had the ever pulling urge to get rid of everything , to make the inside mirror the serene surface , so I started to get rid of stuff and it felt good but not exactly "great" .  Eventually  I stumbled across the book which put me on my journey to simplifying my life , and it really did what it says on the tin , it gave me a plan , and a way to achieve the "click point" in my life , where everything "I" own sparks joy .
If you only read one book this year , make it this one ,

Have you read Marie's book or are you embarking on simplifying your life , are you struggling with getting started or do you have any questions? Have your say in the comments below !

How to tell your cleaner what to clean !!

In our last post we talked about how to find and keep a cleaner, in this post we shall talk a little more about what you should be asking your cleaner do .
  • Firstly bear in mind that your are paying your cleaner and you can choose what you'd like them to do and when you'd like it done . Consider what you'd get the most benefit from not having to do yourself . Consider the amount of time you are paying your cleaner for and be reasonable with your expectations timewise .
  • If you notice something has been missed don't panic ! Your cleaner will be aware that they've not had a chance to get to it and Will hopefully get it done next time . If however it is getting missed each session a gentle reminder is the best way to deal with it .
  • I have compiled a list of tasks I do weekly or rotated for my customers as a guide , you will have your own priorities and every house is different so bear this in mind !

  1. In the kitchen : sanitise all surfaces , cupboard doors, white goods , cooker, eating surfaces , tiles , woodwork, doors and floors , windows , cobwebs.
  2. In the family room : . Hoover , dust , windows , mirrors .
  3.  In the bathrooms sanitise all surfaces, ,shower /bath  , toilet, floors & walls .Windows .
  4. In the bedrooms: Dust , Hoover , windows , woodwork , cobwebs .
  5. In the entryway/porch. Sweep /Hoover . mop . Windows and doors .
  6. In the hall, stairs and landing . Sanitise banisters. Hoover stairs and landing . Cobwebs
This is the minimum I would do in each room . On top of this I have jobs I rotate in each room these include :

  1. Lounge family room . Move furniture and hoover underneath. Clean under the sofa cushions. Move heavy furniture to clean underneath. Clean light fittings .
  2. Kitchen . Clean on top of kitchen cupboards. Clean oven .
  3. Bedroom . Clean underneath beds.
  4. Any windows missed.
  5. Any jobs not completed in the last session.
  6. Brush stairs
  7. Brush round skirting boards .
  8. Sanitise radiators
  9. Any woodwork not done last session.
  10. Any requests from client .
Working in this way enables me to deep clean the whole house in roughly 2 visits, eliminating the need for a "spring clean" . My clients rarely as me to do anything as I have most of it covered , except maybe for visitors or at  christmas time .

Communication really is the key to getting things right , and making sure any equipment they need is on hand and in good working order .
  • Broom
  • Dustpan and brush
  • Bin bags
  • Hoover
  • Mop & bucket
  • Step ladder ( we can't reach unless we can get up there ! )
  • Telescopic brush if you've got very high ceilings !
So there you have it . Do you have anything to add ? Do you have a pet hate that your cleaner always misses ? Are you a cleaner who feels they can't do what is expected of them ? Have your say in the comments below !

What your cleaner really needs you to know !

Any busy person who has ever had a cleaner knows that it's very hard to find one who instantly knows how you want your house cleaned , and even harder to keep one once you've found a good one !
Building a mutual trust with your cleaner may seem like a daunting task but I'm here to tell you exactly how you can find and keep the right cleaner for you .
  • Firstly meet them before you agree to Hire them . explain exactly what you expect and how long you want them in your house. In my experience as a professional cleaner they shouldn't be leaving early because they've  "done all the work" , if you've paid them for two hours they should be staying for the full two hours .
  • They should be able to tell you  roughly how much they can do in a specific time . If you want more doing you will need to book them for more hours .
  • Be flexible especially during school holidays. If my clients hadn't been flexible with me during the school holidays I would probably have missed most weeks, instead we managed to compromise on days which enabled me not to let people down .
  • Tidy up !!! Pick up!!! If your cleaner is having to spend precious time moving your clutter from one place to another or picking stuff up off the floor she is also losing time that she could use for cleaning !
  • Wash the dishes !!! I know my clients would rather I cleaned under the bed or wiped down the woodwork rather than spend half an hour washing last nights dinner plates.  Utalize your cleaner so you don't have to spring clean !
  • Keep kitchen and bathroom surfaces free from clutter so they can be sanitised quickly and proficiently.
  • Make your bed ! Don't waste  your cleaners time on bed making , you're not in a hotel !
  • Agree with your cleaner beforehand whether she will be using her own products or if you will be providing the products yourself . Personally I bring my own products as I know what works !
  • Ask for references. Don't skip this step, you need to know they are trustworthy!
  • Try to go by word of mouth it's always good to go off a recommendation.
My next post will be a detailed list of what you should expect your cleaner to clean and how much you should expect them to do in two hours . Any questions or stories you'd like to share regarding hiring a cleaner , leave a comment below to start a chat !

Winter wardrobe challenge! Ready , steady go go go !!

The last few drops of summer are upon us and winter is rearing its chilly head , it's time to dig out the winter clothes and brace ourselves for the dark nights . Follow these five easy steps to get your winter wardrobe streamlined and easy to use!

Step 1. Empty your wardrobe of anything you know you will not wear untill next summer . We will be heading towards making a wardrobe which is both winter and summer compatible but I shall be doing a seperate post on that at a later date . So for now empty everything on your bed . Now is a good time to assess what hasn't been worn , what was uncomfortable , what didn't make you feel a million dollars , or anything you don't love . If it fits any of those catagories donate immediately !

Step 2 . Wash but don't iron as you'll end up doing it again next summer ! And put away .

Step 3. Get out all winter clothes . Go though each item . Do you love it ? Does it fit ? Does it make you feel fabulous? If not donate it !
Has it got labels on it? Was it expensive ? It doesn't matter , let it go , give yourself permission to get rid of it without the guilt . ( I have an earlier post about this if you're struggling with letting go !)
Ok , you're ready to  wash and put back in your wardrobe . You should now have heaps of space to view your minimal wardrobe and should be able to create many more outfits without the donated clothes weighing you down .

Step 4 repeat steps 1-3 with coats , boots and shoes !

Step 5 repeat all steps for the kids wardrobes too!

Have you tried to simplify your wardrobe or are you a clothes hoarder? I'd love to hear your thoughts about a capsule wardrobe, use the comments box below to have your say !

Now enjoy shopping for outfits in your very own newly decluttered and streamlined wardrobe !!

READY, STEADY GO! Let's get winter ready !

Let's just zoom ahead by a month or two ... You're running out of the door with book bags , water bottles , packed lunches, PE kits , and swimming kits  (and all your stuff for work) , when it hits you...  a great big blast of icy wind  ( why wasn't I prepared for this? !) . You haven't got time to drop the mountain of stuff you're carrying to dash upstairs to dig the gloves out of storage . You then spend the full day feeling guilty that you sent your kids to school with no gloves on . You convince yourself those little fingers will freeze and fall off by lunch time which prompts you do a frantic Internet search on "frostbite" whilst believing you're the worst parent in the playground as everyone else arrives with their gloves on .
Not this year ...., this year we are on it !
So , let's go to your cloakroom or coat / shoe area . Take everything out ( yes everything ) give the room a good clean . Then ,  put away all the summer shoes  and replace with two pairs winter shoes each . The rest of the shoes ,less frequently worn should stay in the wardrobe and returned there after wearing .
Donate any unworn or out grown shoes and coats .
Hang up all jackets and coats (except those worn daily) in the bedroom wardrobe.
Ok , now you should have a basically empty space to work with , so let's not fill it back up to the brim!
Only put back one , daily worn coat per person and two pairs of shoes per person,  everything else should be stored in the wardrobe and is put away there after wearing .
Next,  dig out the hats and gloves from storage and donate unwanted items. Keep out one set per person and yes you guessed it everything else gets stored in their wardrobe until needed .
The trick is to keep this area as streamlined as possible to make leaving the house a breeze . The emptier it is , the easier it is to find the stuff they need everyday .
I also buy the kids gloves in all the same colour so when one glove goes missing (normally after the first day)
You've still got a "pair" . So all my daughters are plain pink and my sons are  plain blue , I usually buy about three pairs each and usually end up with one full pair each at the end of the winter !
Put all wellies on a mud tray and you're now ready for the chill!
Do you have any organising tips to share with us , drop us a line below in the comments with your parenting hacks , we'd love to hear them !

How I eventually got my 4 year old to eat and love a stir fry

Although my 4 year old eats most vegetables without a fuss , he literally balks at anything cut up in the form of salad or stir fry , even though he would happily eat each item individually on his plate if  it  were seperated  and  "whole".
Both my kids are now on school dinners so tea for them yesterday was home made soup,  ( to pack in the veg which is somewhat lacking in their school dinners)
I was having stir fry . So , whilst serving up the dinner I noticed that my other half had not used all the tacos for his dinner yesterday and four were left . So I decided to pop some of my stir fry into two tacos and gave them to the kids as a sort of a side dish . They both scoffed the lot in seconds and begged for more
so , two more were served and demolished again within seconds .
I know it's  a strange concoction and very messy to eat but if it gets my 4 year old to eat a stir fry then who am I to say no !

How to make life a little bit easier for yourself and your kids.

Think back to the lazy summers of our youth , what made it so different from our lives today , apart from the obvious bills to pay , rent to find , health issues, financial worries and work woes?
We were free . Free from the constant connection to something , there was nothing but us . No social media, no adverts telling us what we needed , no designer clothes , no phones , no selfies, no Disneyland , no daytime television , gaming , no junk food , no noisy battery filled toys , no homework , no after school clubs , no competition. No pressure .
We had no "stuff" to worry about , obsess over , or whine for .
It's the first week back at school next week and my diary is already bulging with party invitations and after school stuff even though I  have culled a few activities during the school holidays .
I now try to focus my kids time  on what they love doing  with any after school activities , choosing quality over quantity , this allows  more time in their week for parties or play dates and to still allows my kids plenty free time just to relax and recharge at
home .
I also try to be more present by switching off the internet on my phone for the full day if  I'm at home  and try to leave my phone at home when I'm out with the kids so I'm more focused on the present , and to be honest it feels quite liberating . I also sometimes need to  put my phone away in a drawer and only check it twice a day when I'm at home  to avoid the social media temptation .
If I have five minutes for a coffee I pick up a crossword or read instead of checking my phone and it's far more relaxing than reading about someone else's rose coloured day .
We might not be able to fix all the distractions of our full to bursting lives , but we can go some way to simplify what we can for ourselves and our kids . We can stop making our kids so busy , stay in the present , stop filling up the "free" time and just slow down . If our kids are lives constantly over burdened  then so are ours .

A penny saved is a penny earned . The easiest tip to save money .

Whilst sitting in the doctors waiting room yesterday I picked up a glossy magazine to read , knowing that my simplified life has changed the way I shop , I  was  still very surprised at how offended I was by the front page of consumerism headlines.
"The must have hand bag "
"Why I can't live without velvet "
"Life changing eyeshadow pallet"
So let's break it down , the  "must have " handbag is just a handbag . If I want a handbag I choose one that I like, not because it's a "must have". I have my own style and I don't need a "must have" hand bag to validate that .
To the "why I can't live without velvet" ... person , I urge you to try , I'm pretty sure that you probably can live without velvet , you may struggle without oxygen or food but velvet ? I think you'll survive .
As for the "life changing eyeshadow pallet " in my opinion , the death of a loved one or becoming a parent are "life changing "  events  and to trivialise those events with a comparison to buying an eye shadow pallet makes me sad .
The headline which really stuck out to me was
"the lipstick to make you beautiful" , as if any one product could make anyone person beautiful .  I agree with Audrey Hepburn  who said that the most beautiful thing anyone can put on their face is a smile . Gratitude , kindness  empathy and humility make a person beautiful , lipstick will only enhance the qualities which shine from within , these are the lessons we should be teaching our children .
So with these thoughts in mind , we should see a change in our shopping habits and the way we see adverts .
I  have more money now that I'm not falling for the consumerism mumbojumbo I am constantly bombarded with . I don't want or need anything so I don't buy anything.  I'm not buying "stuff" which will end up in the charity shop in six months time . I now have money to save and more money to spend on doing things with the kids . So the old adage " a penny saved is a penny earned" really is true for the simplified life style . Try it for a month , read between the lines, don't fall for the marketing and enjoy the extra money you earn by not spending .
