A penny saved is a penny earned . The easiest tip to save money .
Whilst sitting in the doctors waiting room yesterday I picked up a glossy magazine to read , knowing that my simplified life has changed the way I shop , I was still very surprised at how offended I was by the front page of consumerism headlines.
"The must have hand bag "
"Why I can't live without velvet "
"Life changing eyeshadow pallet"
So let's break it down , the "must have " handbag is just a handbag . If I want a handbag I choose one that I like, not because it's a "must have". I have my own style and I don't need a "must have" hand bag to validate that .
To the "why I can't live without velvet" ... person , I urge you to try , I'm pretty sure that you probably can live without velvet , you may struggle without oxygen or food but velvet ? I think you'll survive .
As for the "life changing eyeshadow pallet " in my opinion , the death of a loved one or becoming a parent are "life changing " events and to trivialise those events with a comparison to buying an eye shadow pallet makes me sad .
The headline which really stuck out to me was
"the lipstick to make you beautiful" , as if any one product could make anyone person beautiful . I agree with Audrey Hepburn who said that the most beautiful thing anyone can put on their face is a smile . Gratitude , kindness empathy and humility make a person beautiful , lipstick will only enhance the qualities which shine from within , these are the lessons we should be teaching our children .
So with these thoughts in mind , we should see a change in our shopping habits and the way we see adverts .
I have more money now that I'm not falling for the consumerism mumbojumbo I am constantly bombarded with . I don't want or need anything so I don't buy anything. I'm not buying "stuff" which will end up in the charity shop in six months time . I now have money to save and more money to spend on doing things with the kids . So the old adage " a penny saved is a penny earned" really is true for the simplified life style . Try it for a month , read between the lines, don't fall for the marketing and enjoy the extra money you earn by not spending .
