READY, STEADY GO! Let's get winter ready !

Let's just zoom ahead by a month or two ... You're running out of the door with book bags , water bottles , packed lunches, PE kits , and swimming kits  (and all your stuff for work) , when it hits you...  a great big blast of icy wind  ( why wasn't I prepared for this? !) . You haven't got time to drop the mountain of stuff you're carrying to dash upstairs to dig the gloves out of storage . You then spend the full day feeling guilty that you sent your kids to school with no gloves on . You convince yourself those little fingers will freeze and fall off by lunch time which prompts you do a frantic Internet search on "frostbite" whilst believing you're the worst parent in the playground as everyone else arrives with their gloves on .
Not this year ...., this year we are on it !
So , let's go to your cloakroom or coat / shoe area . Take everything out ( yes everything ) give the room a good clean . Then ,  put away all the summer shoes  and replace with two pairs winter shoes each . The rest of the shoes ,less frequently worn should stay in the wardrobe and returned there after wearing .
Donate any unworn or out grown shoes and coats .
Hang up all jackets and coats (except those worn daily) in the bedroom wardrobe.
Ok , now you should have a basically empty space to work with , so let's not fill it back up to the brim!
Only put back one , daily worn coat per person and two pairs of shoes per person,  everything else should be stored in the wardrobe and is put away there after wearing .
Next,  dig out the hats and gloves from storage and donate unwanted items. Keep out one set per person and yes you guessed it everything else gets stored in their wardrobe until needed .
The trick is to keep this area as streamlined as possible to make leaving the house a breeze . The emptier it is , the easier it is to find the stuff they need everyday .
I also buy the kids gloves in all the same colour so when one glove goes missing (normally after the first day)
You've still got a "pair" . So all my daughters are plain pink and my sons are  plain blue , I usually buy about three pairs each and usually end up with one full pair each at the end of the winter !
Put all wellies on a mud tray and you're now ready for the chill!

A penny saved is a penny earned . The easiest tip to save money .

Whilst sitting in the doctors waiting room yesterday I picked up a glossy magazine to read , knowing that my simplified life has changed the way I shop , I  was  still very surprised at how offended I was by the front page of consumerism headlines.
"The must have hand bag "
"Why I can't live without velvet "
"Life changing eyeshadow pallet"
So let's break it down , the  "must have " handbag is just a handbag . If I want a handbag I choose one that I like, not because it's a "must have". I have my own style and I don't need a "must have" hand bag to validate that .
To the "why I can't live without velvet" ... person , I urge you to try , I'm pretty sure that you probably can live without velvet , you may struggle without oxygen or food but velvet ? I think you'll survive .
As for the "life changing eyeshadow pallet " in my opinion , the death of a loved one or becoming a parent are "life changing "  events  and to trivialise those events with a comparison to buying an eye shadow pallet makes me sad .
The headline which really stuck out to me was
"the lipstick to make you beautiful" , as if any one product could make anyone person beautiful .  I agree with Audrey Hepburn  who said that the most beautiful thing anyone can put on their face is a smile . Gratitude , kindness  empathy and humility make a person beautiful , lipstick will only enhance the qualities which shine from within , these are the lessons we should be teaching our children .
So with these thoughts in mind , we should see a change in our shopping habits and the way we see adverts .
I  have more money now that I'm not falling for the consumerism mumbojumbo I am constantly bombarded with . I don't want or need anything so I don't buy anything.  I'm not buying "stuff" which will end up in the charity shop in six months time . I now have money to save and more money to spend on doing things with the kids . So the old adage " a penny saved is a penny earned" really is true for the simplified life style . Try it for a month , read between the lines, don't fall for the marketing and enjoy the extra money you earn by not spending .

Why you should get rid of the "junk drawer"

We've all probably got one or have had one ... The "junk drawer" aptly named because it's the drawer where you stick all the stuff you can't be bothered to put away . You use the excuse that you need to keep it in this drawer because it's "handy" . Not so handy having to dig through reams of other junk when you need it though.
Let's examine the typical contents of the junk drawer.
Tape measure .. Should be in the toolbox .
Phone chargers .... Should be at the charging station .
Sticky tape ... Should be with the stationary.
Pens ... Should also be with the stationary .
Nail clippers .... Should be with the nail stuff.
Random keys ... Should be on the key hook.
Random cables ... Should be in the cable box .
Hair bobbles . ... Should be in the bedroom
Medicine .... Medicine cabinate
And so forth and so on ....
Everything residing in your junk drawer belongs somewhere else in the home .
Tip it all out and go and put it all away . No more trying to organise the junk drawer,  just put it all away.
Now , use the newly empty drawer to get something off your counter tops or surfaces and out of sight.

How to banish visual clutter.

Every day our brains are trying to process billions of messages , trying to define what is important , what needs action , what to dismiss , what to leave to later.
The television , iPhone and laptop all add to our already overloaded overstimulated brains.
Newspaper headlines, adverts, books , clocks , shop windows, road signs and consumer products all bombarding us with instructions to follow .....or not .
Some of us may have extra visual clutter in our homes  having added words such as "bathroom" "love" or "home" to our ornaments .
I wonder how many times a week we unconciously read the label on our shower gel, toothpaste tube, washing up liquid or moisturiser.
Marie Kondo  in her book "spark joy" suggests we protect our homes from the visual clutter of the outside world and encourages us to remove labels wherever possible from products we use daily .
As a mother of two young children I figured this would be almost impossible for safety reasons, but off I went to give it a go .
I started with the hand wash as even my four year old knows it's soap . To my surprise it felt better not to have  " 3000 mint leaves were loving squeezed into this bottle" screaming at me everytime I walked into the bathroom . The process then became addictive , once I started I couldn't stop .
The other eye opening lesson for me was, when I peeled the label off my expensive moisturiser it looked no different than any other brand and I was annoyed at myself for being drawn into their consumerism and advertising . I immediately began to change the way I shopped for luxury products which were once a weakness of mine , and it felt good.
The upside is that no one has washed their hair with conditioner yet as far as I'm aware but you never know in our house !

Ready , steady , go !

Let's take a little trip to the kitchen , have a look around , what do you not use , what have you never used ? What did you think would be a fantastic gadget, pan , cup , jug, bowl but you never reach for it when you're cooking or prepping . What's lurking about taking up space , what item do you have to move to get to the stuff you really use . Pick one item big or small cheap or expensive that you don't use that has served it's time and stick it in the donate bag , and enjoy the space .

Marie Kondos' life changing magic of tidying up .

We all at sometime wish our homes were just how we want them . For many of us that would include a clutter free space filled with things we love . Wardrobes which hold only clothes which fit , are comfortable , our style and all of which we wear . Bathrooms which feel airy and spacious . Kitchens always  immaculately ready to prepare our next meal in . Children's rooms which are tidy and clutter free. Living rooms which feel a spa like tranquility. And finally a serene bedroom ready for a peaceful nights sleep .
It is finally possible to achieve this click point in your home even with a busy family life , and what's more it's possible to maintain this click point for life .
Marie Kondo  in her book The life Changing Magic of tidying up takes us through the stages of  each category and shows us how to achieve the click point in each area .  What makes this book different from any other decluttering book ?  Firstly you don't focus on what you want to discard , only on what you want to keep , the benchmark for this is ,it must "spark joy ".
Secondly it will change the way you shop .. Massively. As you work through the catagories the difference in your home is so clear to see, that you never want it to return to how it was , therefore you see each item you are purchasing  compleatly differently. For anyone wanting to change their space for the better "The life changing magic of tidying up " is the book for you .
